George was in several bands back in Maryland and California. He performed on Radio while in Baltimore playing the classical guitar.

He started composing original classical guitar compositions and though he was never that interested in pop music, he happened to hear a song by a group called The Beatles and noticed that it was well written and arranged. He tried writing a pop song but with little success until he added words to a classical piece he wrote and as George stated, "turned out pretty good for my first attempt".

George was the founding member of "The Kaufmann Duo"; a group he formed with his son singing Broadway, pop, classical guitar and Opera.
